USA, Washington DC, 20 marzo 2023: Il Segretario di Stato americano, Antony Blinken, ha dichiarato che il Dipartimento di Stato ha condotto un “attento esame della legge e dei fatti” e ha concluso che le truppe federali sia dell’Etiopia che dell’Eritrea – un ex avversario che si è alleato con il primo ministro Abiy Ahmed – così come dai ribelli del Fronte di Liberazione del Popolo del Tigray (TPLF) e dalle forze della vicina regione di Amhara, hanno commesso crimini di guerra nel brutale conflitto di due anni. Blinken, dopo una visita ad Addis Abeba, si era detto ottimista sulle prospettive di pace dopo l’accordo siglato tra le parti il 2 novembre. Blinken, è intervenuto durante la presentazione del rapporto annuale sui diritti umani degli Stati Uniti e ha detto: “La maggior parte di questi atti non sono casuali o un semplice effetto collaterale della guerra. Sono calcolati e deliberati. Esortiamo il governo dell’Etiopia e quello dell’Eritrea, nonché il TPLF, a chiamare a rispondere i responsabili di queste atrocità. Il conflitto nel nord dell’Etiopia è stato devastante. Uomini, donne e bambini sono stati uccisi. Donne e ragazze sono state sottoposte a forme orribili di violenza sessuale. Migliaia di persone sono state sfollate con la forza dalle loro case. Intere comunità sono state prese di mira specificamente in base alla loro etnia”.
“War crimes” were committed by all sides in Ethiopia, says US Secretary Blinken
USA, Washington DC, March 20, 2023: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the State Department had conducted a “careful examination of the law and the facts” and concluded that federal troops from both Ethiopia and Eritrea, as well as rebels from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and forces from the neighboring Amhara region, committed war crimes in the brutal two-year conflict. After a visit to Addis Ababa, Blinken said he was optimistic about the prospects for peace after the agreement signed between the parties on 2 November. Blinken, spoke during the presentation of the annual US human rights report and said: ““Many of these actions were not random or a mere byproduct of war. They were calculated and deliberate. We urge the government of Ethiopia and the government of Eritrea as well as the TPLF to hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable. The conflict in northern Ethiopia was devastating. Men, women and children were killed. Women and girls were subject to horrific forms of sexual violence. Thousands were forcibly displaced from their homes. Entire communities were specifically targeted based on their ethnicity.”
