Camerun, Yaoundé, 23 marzo 2023: Il Consiglio costituzionale del Camerun ha convalidato il risultato elettorale delle elezioni del Senato camerunese tenutesi il 12 marzo in cui, come previsto, il Raggruppamento Democratico del Popolo Camerunese (RDPC), partito del presidente del Camerun, Paul Biya, che governa il Paese da oltre 40 anni, ha vinto tutti i 70 seggi in palio. Altri 30 senatori sono di nomina presidenziale; il 90enne onnipotente capo di Stato li sceglierà nei prossimi 10 giorni. Il Senato è eletto indirettamente da consiglieri regionali, consiglieri comunali e capi tradizionali nelle dieci regioni del Camerun. Gli 11.134 elettori hanno scelto tra 10 partiti. Il RDPC ha così stabilito il dominio totale sulla Camera alta del Parlamento, dato che nel Senato uscente l’opposizione aveva appena sette seggi. All’Assemblea nazionale, il partito di Biya ha una maggioranza schiacciante di 164 deputati su 180, eletti nel febbraio 2020.
L’opposizione ha denunciato numerose scorrettezze. Denis Emilien Atangana, un candidato del Front des Democrates du Cameroun, ha affermato che il CPDM ha trasportato gli elettori ai seggi noleggiando autobus, li ha minacciati, ha fatto compravendita di voti.
Cameroon elections: Biya’s party grabs all Senate seats
Cameroon, Yaoundé, March 23, 2023: The Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), the party of President Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon for 41 years, unsurprisingly won all 70 seats in the indirectly elected Senate on March 12, the Constitutional Council announced. The 90-year-old omnipotent head of state must also appoint 30 more senators in the next 10 days. The Senate is indirectly elected by regional councilors, city councilors and traditional chiefs in Cameroon’s ten regions. Ten parties stood before the 11,134 voters. The RDPC has even strengthened its total domination of the upper house of parliament since the opposition had seven seats in the outgoing Senate. In the National Assembly, Mr. Biya’s party and its allies also have an overwhelming majority of 164 deputies out of 180, elected in February 2020. Opposition parties say the elections were not free and fair.
Opposition candidate Denis Emilien Atangana for the Front des Democrates du Cameroon, said the CPDM hired buses to transport all municipal and regional councilors to vote. Voters were also threatened, bullied and given money to vote accordingly.
