Cambogia, Phnom Penh, 7 aprile 2023: Un centinaio di attivisti del principale partito di opposizione, il Candlelight Party, guidati dal vicepresidente del partito Rong Chhun, hanno manifestato davanti alla sede del loro partito a Phnom Penh, per chiedere la liberazione di alcuni dirigenti e militanti del partito. Era la prima manifestazione organizzata dopo diversi anni di silenzio e la polizia li ha subito affrontati e dispersi.
“Chiediamo che lo spazio politico venga aperto in vista delle prossime elezioni per dimostrare alla comunità internazionale che saranno elezioni regolari”, ha detto Thorn Chantha il rappresentante di giovani del partito. “La competizione dovrebbe essere vera. Mentre gli altri partiti hanno il diritto di fare tutto, il Candlelight Party viene limitato”.
Cambodian opposition calls for release of political prisoners
Cambodia, Phnom Penh, 7 April 2023: Around one-hundred activists of the main opposition party of Cambodia, the Candlelight Party, led by their vice-president Rong Chhun, demonstrated in front of the party headquarters in Phnom Penh to demand the release of some party leaders and activists. It was the first demonstration organised after several years of silence and the police immediately confronted and dispersed them.
“We call for the political space to be opened for the next elections to show the international community that there will be fair elections,” said Thorn Chantha, the party’s youth representative. “The competition should be genuine. While other parties have the right to do everything, the Candlelight Party is being restricted.”
