Sam Rainsy è nato a Phnom Penh nel 1949, si trasferì in Francia nel 1965, per studiare e lavorare fino al suo ritorno in Cambogia nel 1992 dove è stato eletto membro del parlamento per la provincia di Siem Reap. Divenuto poco dopo Ministro delle Finanze, nel 1995 ha fondato il Khmer Nation Party e nel 1998 il Sam Rainsy Party ottenendo il 22% dei consensi alle elezioni del 2003. Ha poi fondato il Cambodia National Rescue Party insieme al leader dello Human Rights Party, Kem Sokha e nel 2013 il nuovo partito di opposizione ha quasi ottenuto la metà dei seggi. Nel 2015 è stato accusato di tradimento e costretto all’esilio mentre il suo partito veniva sciolto con una decisione politicamente motivata dalla Corte Suprema. Amico di lunga data di Marco Pannella, è stato presidente onorario del Partito Radicale Transnazionale e dal 2016 Rainsy è membro onorario del Global Committee for the Rule of Law – Marco Pannella. E’ sposato con Saumura Tioulong, ex deputata dell’opposizione.
Saumura Tioulong, nata a Phnom Penh nel 1950, ha studiato in Francia laureandosi in economia e finanza presso l’Istituto di studi politici di Parigi nel 1974 ed ha iniziato a lavorare al Banque Indosuez nel 1976, dove si occupa degli investimenti asiatici. Si occupa di investimenti in borsa specializzata nei mercati del sud-est asiatico fino al 1981, quando inizia a far parte del FUNCINPEC, il partito appena creato dal Re Norodom Sihanouk. Dal 1993 al 1995 è stata vicepresidente della Banca nazionale della Cambogia e nel 1996 entra nel comitato direttivo del Khmer Nation Party, fondato dal marito Sam Rainsy, che aveva sposato nel 1971. Nel 1998 è eletta parlamentare per il Sam Rainsy Party e successivamente nel 2003 e nel 2008 con il Cambodia National Rescue Party. Dal 2015 vive con Sam Rainsy in esilio a Parigi.
Sam Rainsy, born in Phnom Penh, on 10 March 1949. He moved to France in 1965 to study and work until he returned to Cambodia in 1992 where he was elected a Member of Parliament for Siem Reap province. Soon after he became Minister of Finance, in 1995 he founded the Khmer Nation Party and in 1998 the Sam Rainsy Party which obtained 22% of the votes in the 2003 elections. He then founded the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) together with the leader of the Human Rights Party, Kem Sokha, and in 2013 the new opposition party won almost half of the seats. In 2015, he was charged with treason and forced into exile as the CNRP was dissolved with a politically motivated decision by the Supreme Court. A longtime friend of Marco Pannella, he was honorary president of the Transnational Radical Party and since 2016 then Rainsy has been an honorary member of the Global Committee for the Rule of Law-Marco Pannella. He is married to Saumura Tioulong, former opposition MP.
Saumura Tioulong, born Phnom Penh in 1950, studied in France graduated in economics and finance at the Paris Institute of Political Studies in 1974 and began working at the Banque Indosuez in 1976, where she deals with Asian investments. She was involved in stock market investments specializing in Southeast Asian markets until 1981, when she joined FUNCINPEC, the newly created party of King Norodom Sihanouk. From 1993 to 1995 she was vice president of the National Bank of Cambodia and in 1996 she joined the executive committee of the Khmer Nation Party, founded by her husband Sam Rainsy, whom she had married in 1971. In 1998 she was elected parliamentarian for the Sam Rainsy Party and subsequently in 2003 and in 2008 with the Cambodia National Rescue Party. Since 2015 she has been living with Sam Rainsy in exile in Paris.
